Baylor School of Music Ensembles
There are ample performance opportunities at Baylor. Our students graduate with more performance experience under their belts than just about any other music students in the country. .
Chamber Music
Music majors enroll in chamber music every semester. In this class, they are assigned a chamber music group with whom they rehearse twice a week. They are coached by Baylor faculty members, and give performances both on campus and in the community.
Orchestras
Baylor Symphony Orchestra
The BSO consists primarily of music majors. Bassoonists are selected for this ensemble by auditions at the beginning of each school year. The BSO has recently traveled to Belgium, and will be performing at the TMEA and CODA conventions in the 2013-2014 school year. The BSO performs major orchestral repertoire, with examples from recent years being: Beethoven Symphony 3 and 9, Shostakovich Symphony 7, Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Mahler Symphony 1, and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite.
Campus Orchestra
This orchestra is primarily a non-music major orchestra for string players. However, several times a year wind players from the Symphonic Band are invited to perform. This is an excellent way for Symphonic Band members to gain orchestral experience, preparing them for the BSO in future years.
Bands:
Wind Ensemble
The wind ensemble is the top band at Baylor. Students in this ensemble typically play in the BSO as well. One of the top wind ensembles in the nation, the Baylor Wind Ensemble has recently given performances at the TMEA convention in San Antonio and the College Band Directors National Association conference in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Symphonic Band
Also an excellent ensemble, the Baylor Symphonic Band is comprised of primarily music majors. The band plays professional-level repertoire at an extremely high level. The Symphonic Band recently performed at the College Band Directors National Association regional conference in San Antonio, TX.
Concert Band
The Concert Band is comprised primarily of non-music majors. Meeting only in the Spring semesters, typically students in this band also play in the Golden Wave marching band in the fall.
Golden Wave Marching Band
The marching band serves an important function in the university. They perform at all of the home football games and some of the away games, including bowl games. These bowl games provide travel experiences for the students. Last December the BUGWB traveled to San Diego with the football team. This is an excellent social outlet as well as musical, and is an excellent way to get involved in the larger University activities as a freshman. All freshman and sophomore music education majors are required to participate in the BUGWB, and the band is comprised of both non-music majors and music majors of all levels.
